Hi all,

What is the influence of salt on Discus?

Should I add salt when I buy new Discus?

Thanks in advance,
Nir.

Salt = NaCl

Here my opinion on this issue:

Some people in Israel are convinced that salt could be used for any "minor" fish problem: acclimatation of new fishes (like discus), decrease in appetite ...
I told Nir that this "natural" product should be used cautiously only for ectoparasitosis (?) (bacteria, unicellular parasites) with a minimal concentration of 4-5 g/l (or more for other specific american cichlidae) ... I told him also that this "light" treatment could turn to dangerous if a scientific protocol before use is not established ...

Other opinions?

I would just add something ;)

When you buy new fishes of any kind, please use a quarantine tank and observe them first without adding salt or any medics ... Using self preventive methods could lead to nothing but weaken the fishes ! In case of problem such as anorexia or other symptoms, then first ask for help to determine the possible origin of the problem (bacterial diseases, parasites such worms, water quality and so long) and the better therapy

Nice to read you ;) :) !

Thanks Tara.
But what do you thing about adding salt when the fish are sick?
I saw some cases that the fish were sick and the only thing that helped them is only increasing temp and adding some salt (usually 1 tablespoon per 20 liter)

Hello Nir,

Nobody can give you a miracle traitment with salt, you have to observe your fishes and to make a good diagnostic before to applicate a medicine wich will be given to you if you answer the question on this forum. Salt and higher température is not adapted to all the diseases that you will meet with your fish.

Sincerly Phil

PS sorry for my old school english remenbers. ;)

New discus just need some perfect water, low level in GH (th), pH between 6 and 7, and no nitrats or ammonia, with big change of water.

They don't need salt. Salt must be use only when the fish are sicks and when the illness is known as bacteria or protozoan problem. In these case only salt can be use but 1 tablespoon per 20 liters is not enough! The good way is to put 5 gramms per liter of water in one time.

Sorry for my english too ...

Trust me, the only thing which made the différence with your friend case is the isolation of the fishes and the big water changes and definitely not the salt he has added!

Hi Nir,

What I remember is that these discus suffered from a hiGH pollution in their community tank!
After isolation and performing a daily refresh of the water, it took time I agree but finally a recovery was observed. I really don't think that the addition of salt (1teaspoon/20 Liter) takes any part in this story. Concerning their recovery I will no say that the worse is behind us already, he has to look after them from near ...

Hello Nir !

And what about explaining here all the story of these Discus from the beginning, so that we can know all of the situation and maybe add something to what Manu, Phil and Thierry already told you ?
